What are roller bearings, and how do they function?

Roller bearings are specialized rolling bearings designed to support axial and radial forces or torque loads, depending on their design. They consist of three main components: inner ring, outer ring and rolling element. These components secure the shafts and axles, enabling rotation within the application. Rolling friction between the rings is minimized by the rolling elements moving along the raceway.

This robust design offers three key advantages:

These features make roller bearings ideal for applications that must handle extremely high loads within a compact space and operate under challenging environmental conditions.

What is the difference between rolling bearings and ball bearings?

They differ from ball bearings by using cylindrical rolling elements (rollers) between the inner and outer rings instead of spherical ones. The rollers are positioned vertically to the roller axis, providing a larger contact surface with the raceway compared to balls.

This design reduces the transmitted forces per unit area, allowing roller slewing rings to handle higher forces. As a result, roller bearings are significantly more robust and resilient than ball bearings, making them especially suitable for use in highly stressed areas of an application.

The primary challenge is to accurately calculate the load capacity and rigidity of the bearing in advance, given the significant loads it will endure, to ensure it meets the requirements of the surrounding construction. Various factors must be taken into account in the calculation, such as the position of the bearing axis, the type of movement in the end application, the installation situation and the ambient conditions.
